Franklin Smith Australia is a specialist construction recruitment agency conducting this search on behalf of one of the industry's leading niche construction suppliers. Our client is seeking a General Manager to oversee operations across both the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

This business, which is owned by a large Australian consortium, has a presence across the entirety of New Zealand and supply an industry-leading product to various sectors including Education, Health, Defence and other silos of Social Infrastructure.

Due to continued growth the business is seeking a General Manager to join their leadership team based in Christchurch. Reporting to the Managing Director of New Zealand with 16 direct reports, this person will have full P&L responsibility as well as overseeing and directing the operations and projects departments.

This business sits in a unique section of the construction industry with opportunities to grow multiple revenue streams making this business a key marker for organic and structured growth in the years to come.

The ideal candidate has had experience as a Divisional Head, Project Director or Project Lead whilst overseeing all elements of profit and loss within a department or project.

This opportunity can be based out of Christchurch however frequent travel throughout New Zealand is required.

  • General Manager of operations, projects, and manages the profitability of the business in New Zealand.
  • Responsible for growth, strategy and delivery of key accounts and projects.
  • Responsible for the ongoing profitability of the business throughout New Zealand.
  • Development of the teams and future leaders of the business.
  • Administration of Contracts and Legalities associated with Construction Project


  • Degree in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying.
  • A minimum of 10 years construction experience in New Zealand or Australia with 5 years in a leadership role such as GM or division lead.
  • Proven track record delivering multiple projects on time and on budget whilst generating profit and developing a high performance team culture.
  • Previous experience establishing and implementing strong health and safety procedures across the business.
  • Strong commercial acumen and previous track record working with large public sector clientele in New Zealand or Australia.
  • Experience tendering and leading pre-contract bid teams to successful project wins.
